Maryland distinguishes edge frames from plate covers. Keep the plate clearly legible, uncovered, secure, horizontal, and visible at all times.

Arizona allows frames that keep every character, year tab, and the word Arizona visible from all angles. State-name violations carry specific penalties.

Washington allows frames only when tabs, identifying letters, and numbers stay unobscured and the plate remains plainly visible and readable.

Tennessee allows a plate frame only when the plate stays secure, horizontal, visible, clean, illuminated, and fully legible at the required location.

Pennsylvania permits a plate frame that only outlines the plate and keeps its number and issuing jurisdiction identifiable to people and cameras.

Oklahoma license plate frames must leave the decal and every letter and number visible. A 2026 decorative-frame proposal has not become law.

License plate frames are legal in North Carolina only when the number, letters, state name, and renewal sticker details remain clearly legible.
