License plate frames are not categorically banned in Indiana, but they cannot obscure the plate. The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles says all text, numbers, and stickers must be fully visible and not blocked by a frame, cover, part of the vehicle, or other material.

A slim, centered frame can meet that standard. A thick border that hides even part of the expiration, county, or plate text is the problem—not the mere presence of a frame.

Indiana’s plate-display rule

Indiana Code § 9-18.1-4-4 requires the plate to be securely fastened in a horizontal and upright position, generally at least 12 inches above the ground, where it is clearly visible. It must be free from foreign material, clearly legible, and not obstructed by tires, bumpers, accessories, or other opaque objects.

The BMV translates that statute into plain guidance: the rear plate must show all text, numbers, and stickers without obstruction, including obstruction from plate frames and covers.

Which Indiana stickers need room?

The BMV identifies three sticker locations on a standard Indiana plate:

  • the registration expiration year in the upper-right corner;
  • the expiration month and day in the upper-left corner; and
  • the county indicator in the lower-right corner.

That layout is exactly why corner-heavy frames cause trouble. A frame may clear the large number in the center while overlapping one or more stickers. Inspect every corner after the hardware is tightened.

Are license plate frames legal in Indiana?

Yes, when the installed frame leaves all plate information fully visible and the plate otherwise meets the mounting rule. Indiana’s own BMV guidance shows legal and illegal frame examples, reinforcing that the fit—not just the product category—decides the issue.

A frame is likely to create a problem when it:

  • covers any part of a letter or number;
  • overlaps “Indiana” or other plate text;
  • hides an expiration or county sticker;
  • shifts the plate out of a horizontal, upright position;
  • uses an opaque or tinted layer over the face; or
  • holds dirt or snow across official information.

Does Indiana require a front plate?

Most Indiana passenger vehicles display one plate on the rear. The statute lists different placement for certain tractors, dump trucks, and trucks with a rear-mounted forklift or similar mechanism. Temporary and interim plates also have specific display options.

Putting a decorative plate on the front does not change the rules for the official rear registration plate. Keep the issued rear plate at the required position and fully visible.

Frame versus cover

An open frame borders the plate. A cover adds a layer over the plate face. That layer can be opaque, tinted, reflective, cloudy, or simply dirty enough to reduce legibility. Indiana’s guidance mentions both frames and covers as possible obstructions, so neither label gives an accessory an automatic pass.

If you want decoration without adding material over the characters, a narrow open frame is the simpler design. You can compare the construction of a plate frame and a cover before choosing one.

How to check your frame

  1. Install the current stickers correctly. A frame cannot solve a misplaced sticker.
  2. Center the plate inside the opening. Make sure tightening the screws does not pull it upward or sideways.
  3. Trace all four edges with your eyes. Every text element, number, and sticker should remain fully visible.
  4. Read it from behind the car. Do not judge only from arm’s length.
  5. Check at night. Covers, tinted hardware, and dirt can behave differently under the plate lamp or headlights.
  6. Recheck after a wash or winter drive. Slush and grime often gather behind thick lower borders.

When the top or corners look close, compare the frame’s visible opening with the plate. The usable license plate frame opening size matters more than the outside dimensions.

Can a dealer frame cover the county sticker?

No special exemption applies just because a dealer supplied the frame. The BMV says all stickers must be fully visible. Replace the frame with a slimmer design or remove it.

What happens if the plate is obstructed?

A violation of the display section is a Class C infraction. More importantly, an obstructed plate can lead to an avoidable stop. Correcting an overlapping frame is usually immediate: remove it, re-center it, or choose a border that clears the sticker areas.

Frequently asked questions

Can a frame cover the word “Indiana”?

No. The BMV requires all plate text to remain fully visible.

Are smoked plate covers legal in Indiana?

A smoked cover that reduces visibility or obscures plate information conflicts with the display rule. Even an untinted cover can become a problem if glare, haze, or dirt makes the plate harder to read.

Can the frame touch a sticker if the date is still readable?

The BMV’s wording is “fully visible.” Leave the complete sticker exposed rather than relying on partial readability.

Can you display the plate in the rear window?

The statute gives specific window-display options for certain interim plates. A standard issued plate should be mounted as required on the rear of the vehicle, not moved to the window for convenience.

Bottom line

Indiana’s rule is easy to apply once you inspect the whole plate: every text element, number, and sticker must remain fully visible. A slim open frame can work; a wide border or cover that obscures official information cannot.
